Charlie received his MSc in Violence, Conflict, and Development from SOAS, where his thesis focused on social and gang violence in Brazil, and his BA in French and Spanish from Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL), during which time in studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and La Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico.

After graduating, he worked with NGOs in London with a focus on human rights and Latin America before undertaking roles with a research institute in Bethlehem and an award-winning conflict resolution think tank in Jerusalem.

He moved full-time to the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) from 2011-2016 where he worked as a reporter, news editor, and senior editor with Ma’an News Agency, the largest independent Palestinian news organisation.

During this time he reported and edited news, in-depth, and feature stories on the Israel/Palestine conflict, covering Israeli and Palestinian politics, escalating tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem, Israeli wars in Gaza, settler violence, prisoner releases, protests, and culture events.

Since 2017, Charlie has been based in London with The New Arab (Al-Araby Al-Jadeed), a leading English-language news website covering the Middle East.

In that time, he has worked as a staff writer, news editor, features editor, and currently runs the Analysis Desk, working with journalists, reporters, experts, and academics to shape, commission, and publish in-depth coverage of the Middle East and beyond.

His writing focuses on politics, conflict, human rights, culture, and international relations and has appeared in The New Arab, Open Democracy, Middle East Eye, Al-Monitor, Muftah, Inter Press Service, and Ma’an News Agency, among others.

Born and raised in London, Charlie has worked and studied in Israel/Palestine, Mexico, Cuba, France, and Peru.
